Nicaragua Trip 2016
Nicaragua Trip 2016
This summer my dad and I headed to Nicaragua on a Mission Trip. We spent 8 days in and around Leon with a team of 11 other students and parents from our church, Hope Community Church, helping the non-profit SuNica, build community and show God’s love. SuNica does this through education, clean water and discipleship. The main thing we did was help with a soccer clinic & tournament, a new thing SuNica is trying is organized sports for the kids. Through this we served the staff and volunteers, as well as kids in the community. We also gained a new perspective that we brought back home. A special thanks to everyone who donated to the trip or bought a pie, we couldn’t have done it without you.

About the Trip
Our leader kept stressing flexibility - what we expected is not what was going to happen - that was very true for myself as I ended up serving as a ref for all the older boys’ games instead of “coaching.” While it was hard and to start I felt like I was not doing any good I came to realize while I wasn’t perfect and even though I wasn’t comfortable, being a ref allowed the boys to play in a real game. One of the SuNica leaders pointed out that they had never had a ref and at times it allowed them to be like the superstars of the World Cup - complaining at the ref! In the end I didn’t necessarily develop the same bonds as Kaitlyn but if everyone likes the ref then I didn’t do a good job. In the end seeing the passion of the boys for the beautiful game as the final went to 9 rounds of PKs cemented the realization that we don’t all serve in the same way. God has a plan for us and it happens for His glory and we don’t always know what it is until it unfolds!
I have to tip my cap to the community leaders of SuNica - Nicaraguan young adults who I learned about the power of God from in everything they do to serve their community.
